I got the news this evening - my grandmother shuffled off her worn out mortal coil, today. She's been in a nursing home since 2001 with Alzheimer's, and I can only think this must be a relief for her. She's been trapped in this body with a physical brain that the wiring had gone bad in, and I'm sure if it were me I'd have been ready to be done with it ages ago.
My Uncle, Don Jimcito, phoned to fill me in on everything, and he said she did a very no-nonsense moving on; she was walking down the hall in the nursing home and just dropped in her tracks. Which is kind of what Grampa did, too, though he did it in a swimming pool at his physical therapy. ("And," I said to my Uncle, "Probably he had something nice to look at, too.") Sounds like a good death to me - no lingering.
Don Jimcito pointed out that Grammy and Grampa couldn't have worked it all out any better. No lingering or grieving for either of them.
I'm really glad he phoned me. And I was even more glad that my cousins also phoned. I had been afraid that nobody would. And I made plans with them for Easter. :)
I attempted to phone my brothers, and ended up having to leave messages on their answering machines. Blah. But it can't be helped - they'd be able to tell by my voice that something was up, and I didn't want to leave them in suspense because they'd worry.
