ETA: The story is true. Names have been changed to protect the innocent. (I gave it some thought after I wrote all this and realized that it was very bad of me to be so attached to people's names. They don't want their names all over the internets any more than I do.)
When we were at the Tilt'n Diner on Saturday a gorgeous woman walked in - and that is saying something, because the whole place was filled with cute girls, but she was a gorgeous woman. I spotted her walking up to the door and almost involuntarily whispered "Wow." She wore high heeled boots and strode confidently, her skin was pure milk and her hair flowed out behind her and her expression was as if the world delighted her. I was riveted with awe as she entered and found a seat. And then I gulped and turned back to
eor and said, "Oh my god. She looks like my trainee." He snorted. "You've been spending way too much time with him."
She also reminded me of Tall Sandi. Sandi didn't have the overwhelming confidence of the girl at the Tilt'n Diner, she had a more shy and doubtful expression, but a kind of quiet hung about her, something which might be mistaken for serenity, or at least patience. And she always kept her hair short. Maybe this girl at the Tilt'n didn't look at all like her, I don't know. It's been years.
A lot of people came and went through the apartments my parents kept when I was a kid, but one of the most beautiful women I ever saw was Tall Sandi, who lived with David and Short Sandy and Doug and a big shaggy black-and-brown dog named Rufus who was like a quiet and long-suffering bear. (I didn't usually mind when my dog would beat up on other dogs, but Rufus always tried hard to stay out of Shawn's way, even though he must have weighed nearly twice as much as Shawn. I felt terrible when they would get into it.) David and Sandi and Doug and Sandy [I had to think to come up with names that kept the rhythm of their actual names]. I always kind of suspected that they were a group relationship while they were at our place, but I'll probably never know for sure.
Doug got a job working for Gordon Bok's brother, and he and Short Sandy lived in a servant's house which was nicer than anything I'd ever seen. That official site about Gordon Bock fails to note that his family had Money. But Doug died young of a heart attack - he was a stocky man, auburn-haired and moody, so this end was probably inevitable at that time - and I don't know what happened with Short Sandy after that. I'm sure she probably carried on quite well - she was one of those short, round, perky, women who always seem to keep on with an even keel no matter what. She was way cute, too, with a mass of blond curls, and the cute always do well.
David and Sandi got married and moved to Peak's Island, which is just off the coast from Portland. It's expensive, but he had become a brick-layer, a respectable job around here where there's plenty of brick houses and chimneys which need repair, so they could get by. Rufus lived to an advanced age for such a big dog. Years and years later after they got divorced and I was working at the Hannaford here in Portland (so, like eight years ago) I saw Tall Sandi again and she looked just the same. Oh, a little older, sure, but not changed significantly. And I wondered if she would go out with me. And then I felt like I should probably scrub my brain out for thinking such a thing because it's like having a crush on your aunt or something. She'd certainly be squicked to think that I'd had a crush on her all the time when I was just this little dorky kid.
But I can't help wondering if she still looks just the same.
PS - When I saw her again as an adult I was suprised that Tall Sandi really wasn't much taller than I am, now. Which means Short Sandy must have been pretty short.
