I watched a bit of the new version of "The King And I" with - is it Jody Foster?  Looked like. - while I was on the treadmill this morning.  I really didn't know how to take it.  I cringed a lot at the main character's overwhelming Anglocentricness and wondered if she was going to develop a real appreciation for the culture of Siam or where the hell the story was going to go.  I've never seen the original, and after telling Eor about this experience he suggested we really should view that and "The Sound of Music" so we'll fill in that hole in our cultural literacy, that Julie Andrews-shaped hole.  I'm ... scared.  But I shall gird my loins and brave the attempt.

Well, I know the general shape of the hole, and of course I've read [livejournal.com profile] daegaer's The Sound of Omens (http://daegaer.livejournal.com/20533.html). ;)
