*stares at her email, willing her story to come back from the betas* It's only eleven thousand some-odd words; how bad can it be? *paces metaphorically*
To take my mind off it, I should try to write about this meme
mizzmarvel gave me ages ago. She asked me to write about three interests and three icons of mine. I don't know if I'll be able to do it justice in the few minutes I have left, today, but I might as well try.
clever valets
Brains = sexy, and valet - well, there's that whole power-dynamic thing. Who appears to be in charge vs. who is REALLY in charge. And really really in charge? Who knows.
taters
I've never met a potato I didn't like. Seriously. Fried, deep fried, baked, mashed, au gratin. Potatoes have GABA, an enzyme (I think?) that mates with pleasure centers in your brain. Depressed? Have a potato.
Victorian homoeroticism
So much better than the modern kind! Where else do you get that hint of drama just by being? From the boarding school hotbeds of experimentation to the general society where people publicly decried it as sin and vice, and privately adored the allure of sin and vice. It's unavoidably romantic. And then the norms of Victorian times that allowed straight guys to express love and walk arm-in-arm with friends, further confusing all the lines - it's just delicious. Truly my guilty pleasure.

This is a screencap made by
cheezdanish from "What's Opera, Doc?" and that's Bugs Bunny to the left of the tree. It's my favored icon for melancholy because it's also representative of the firm underlying belief I have that, regardless of how awful it really is, there's comedy there somewhere.

Death with cats! Isn't he just so sweet? Death loves cats, that's why little old people who keep cats live so long. :) For anyone who doesn't read Pratchett (although I'm sure that's most of you on my flist, but there are people who are not LJers who read this), this is Death from Discworld, who is fascinated by humans - he does have to work with them all the time - and tries to learn to be like them. The things he latches onto are wonderfully small, and he often gets them a little wrong, but it's so heartening that he cares. Sometimes, though it's not quite the same, I start singing Susan Vega's "Thin Man" when I think of Disc Death - "He's the thin man, with a date for me / To arrive at some point, don't know when it will be."

"Your car is ON FIRE" - is a quote from Good Omens, by Pratchett and Gaimen, (and again, forgive me flist, but I'll write this for people who don't know this fandom) it's just this random cranky old man who likes to write letters to the local paper. He's walking his dog, composing a letter in his head about how young people today are disrespectful, when Crowley stops to ask him directions. It's nearing the end of the world, and Crowley kept driving to try to catch up with his friend Aziraphale (the angel) even though his car was on fire (Crowley being a demon he can hold the car together by ignoring the fact that it's burning). So this cranky old man who doesn't ever want the world to change is confronted by something he just can't understand and he's completely over his head in inability to deal with - so he just gives the directions. It's about... well. What does it symbolize for me? Hm. Sometimes this world is just a whole lot more bizarre than I can handle? That might be a start. Probably the case more often than not. On the other hand sometimes I'm the thing that's just a whole lot more bizarre than other people can handle, and then I feel like I'm Crowley, for a moment. ;>
I don't use any of these icons near enough. Thank you,
mizzmarvel, for reminding me that they are there because they do have some meaning for me.
If anyone wants to do this meme, let me know, and I'll choose three of your interests and icons for you to write about. :)

Also, I know I've seen you use this one for talking about books, but I'm not sure where it comes from or why he's eating paper. (*crosses her fingers that she's figured how to make links properly and made the right links.*)
I've always loved this one:
And I know the source of this one (but you can pretend I don't), but not what you attach to it, so because I think it's cool I want to know more:
