Because Kryptyd posted about taking a class I began to wonder how the Charleston is done, so I did a quick search and found this little clip:

The post in which I found the above embedded tells what the basic steps are... step forward with right foot, touch left foot forward, step back with left foot, touch left foot back. What these guys are doing is all about them being amazing dancers.

And in Holmesian news, the second ep of the new BBC Holmes movies (set in the present day) is up, although I'm not sure if you have to subscribe to Scienceofdeduction or friend 'him' on YouTube.
Although I haven't watched that much of it, what I've seen so far was enjoyable, but (spoilers here!) Copperbadge gives the second ep a much less enthusiastic review than the first ep.

I'd better get out of my pyjamas and into the garden. The railroad has started replacing rails and Eor's afraid that if we don't move the wheelbarrow it might be in the wrong place and one of those quarter-mile long rails might get dropped on it.

ETA: Oh, and it's Tuesday, so I'm going to pick up some packages and go to the bakery! Eor said maybe we should lay off on the bakery, but yeah, right. I'll at least get a muffin or something, I don't want them to think I don't love them anymore.

We've quite liked it so far, the only thing is it's on so late we're knackered next morning

I don't know enough about the Charleston yet, don't "get" dancing at all, and learned a slightly different step, but I THINK the above steps sound like the moves as done by the leader. They'd be opposite for whoever is following, i.e. they'd step back on the opposite foot first. The other thing is you do a little sort of "bob" in between each step. That's important to get the correct rhythm. I bet a little bob isn't the technical term for it though. I really hope I can learn this!

P.S. I can't see the video until I get home from work, so I could well be talking complete nonsense!

When I was writing a fic that necessitated knowing the steps, I found this hilarious 1920's instructional film for the Charleston:

And on the topic of completely different dances, check this out:

Oh, that video, those guys are nuts! I can only barely pick out the basic dance step, this is all about showing off how you can dress it up. :)

Oh man, those Russian soldiers are great! :D Yeah, breakdancing is no new thing, is it?

I tried to follow the steps on the instructional video but got confused IMMEDIATELY.

On youtube it's posted in 9 ten-minute installements, so I find it easy to watch a little and then go to work and save the rest for tomorrow. Well, not easy really, but possible. :)

Oh, getting it right seems really a WHOLE lot harder than the extremely simplified version as he told it on that post. Did you look at the vid Daegaer posted below??

Yes, I can't wait to watch all these vids with sound when I get home! I'm REALLY excited about the charleston - eeee!

Learn the dance - how else can you ever take a taxi again?!
