I've had people say to me, "That's a nice idea for a story. Now write the story," when I thought I had written a story.* And I read one today that made me feel like saying the same thing. I think I get it, now. When you're writing a fanfic that shows events in a canon story from a different point of view it makes sense to refer to events which everyone who's read the story will already be familiar with. When you're writing about events that didn't happen in the canon story and you have it all happen in the head and memory of a character it feels like a tease. I'm not complaining - I liked this piece of writing on cheesemongers by 7tree_hugger - There Will Be Good Day - it refers to Lofty and Tonker (Monsterous Regiment) meeting Granny Weatherwax. It's a neat idea - and now I really want to read the story.:)

* In particular I got that comment concering the ending of my Jeeves/Wooster "Bended Knee" - basically the reader thought I suddenly went all vague when I could have show the actual events.
