This morning, thanks to [livejournal.com profile] mamaslyth's post I started flipping through back posts of the webcomic XKCD and this one reminded me that I think it's a shame that the job of lighthouse tender doesn't exist anymore. Some people, you know, that's just what they should be doing. Made obsolete, people who should have been lighthouse operators are wandering the streets or working at McDonald's.

Yeah, see? That's just what I'm talking about. Here he had a refuge from the world and automation took it away. It sounds as though this particular character has the capacity to adapt, but I think there are a lot of people who just can't deal with the world.
