We looked at few "fixer uppers" too but even though the idea is romantic we can just about afford a house, and couldn't afford extensive repairs on top of it. Also with work, where would you get the time?
Every weekend would be devoted to it. We'd have no rest 'til the end of time. WITH an hour commute on top of that every week day. It would be just like when we were fixing up the house in New Hampshire, only we'd be commuting seperately (instead of together as we did when we were in NH) so we wouldn't even get to talk on the commute, because we work a half-shift off from each other. Matt would have to be going to bed by 9pm and I wouldn't be getting HOME until 9pm. I'm thinking the commute is really the deal-breaker. But, the poor dear house needs someone to take care of it. 1920s woodwork! A fireplace!

(It hasn't been lived in for about two years, and the previous owners vacated in a hurry - probably because they thought they were about to get raided for the pot plants they were growing in the basement. We found the grow light and pots.)
Yeah, I think we've pretty much decided against it. ;) But seriously, it was a long hard think, because if you look on the reply I made to Kryptyd, above, you can see it has lovely woodwork inside, and all the windows have recently been replaced.
Yeah, it does look horrible from that angle. But look at the windows - they're new. Inside all it needs is cleaning out the trash and painting. Well, probably insulation and electrical work, but Eor can do electrical. I've no idea what the furnace is like, and that can run into some money and is vital in this climate (frozen and burst pipes can completely trash a house). And, oh yeah, the soil stack for the toilet needs to be re-done - they did leave it going into the attic, where it would release poisonous and explosive gasses INSIDE the house, but the structure of the main part of the house seems as solid as that porch looks horrible.
