Finished "Fortune of War" - omg, good ending, but he left one cliffhangery thread, so I need to get the next book as soon as possible! Cripes. The library doesn't open until the exact time I have to be in the optometrists office. And tomorrow it doesn't open until I have to be at work, so Thursday is the first day I can get the next book. They'd better have it. Father D. was right, my soul now belongs to Patrick O'Brian.

BTW, did I mention these new glasses are not working out for shit? I bought a $400 headache. I'm pissed, and if they try to charge me again for the appointment today, which is supposed to be to sort out the mess they made last time, I might throw a hissy and tell them to take their glasses and shove them up someplace that rhymes. I'd better go find my five-year-old glasses and see if I can make do with them, because I didn't get a backup pair made last time and this time I had them replace my lenses and they threw the old ones away. Which seems pretty short-sighted when you're giving someone bifocals for the first time and you don't know if they'll be able to get used to them.

Our finances are looking pretty bad what with one thing an another. I keep saying I'll look up some overtime at work, but for some reason I'm always too slow - overtime requests are posted and the time I can do is filled right away, because everyone else on my shift can also do that time period, and there aren't many slots offered.

Speaking of which I'd better check my bank account and see if the check from Eor which I deposited yesterday has cleared yet so I can pay off my credit card bill. Two months in a row we've had to borrow from the savings (which is in his name) in order to get the credit card in my name payed off, not good. Even if a good deal of it is things we shared the benefit of, and necessary stuff, and unpredictable, I still feel as though it indicates I'm not managing things well.

www.selectspecs.com - I have bought from them for the last few pairs of glasses and they are great. They tell you exactly what stage of the process they're at and are really cheap. I was quoted 549 euro for a pair of varifocals, and instead I got distance and reading glasses from select specs for a total of 128 euro (including shipping). If I hadn't had both pairs of my glasses thinned down two steps (one thinning step is free), I'd have paid only about 75 euro!

Anyway, I hope they sort out your glasses - vision-related headaches are so horrible.

You know initially I was really confused by this - I went "how do they do the exam online?" I guess you have to get the exam done and then send the prescription to the lens place?

Yes, you fill in your prescription details - you've already had the examination, so if you ask for a copy of your prescription it should be perfectly up to date (make sure they put down "pupillary distance" on it). They're very quick and reliable.

Turns out they did my prescription incorrectly. They said it changed, but in two weeks? Yeah, right. Considering the old glasses from like five or more years ago work pretty well, I'm thinking NOT. They're remaking the glasses with the NEW new Rx for free (re-exam was also free), but I think for a backup I might to go my old doctor (why did I switch??) and get my last prescription refilled. Usually he charged me very little for the making of the glasses, because I used to work for his brother who runs the lens grinding place.

Urgh, I just checked out this book on Amazon to see what it was and what should I spy but a review by Kevin Myers! The most horrible man in Ireland! Wuuurgh!

I wouldn't let that put me off though. It's a pity I'm only getting around to thinking of holiday reads now (too late). I would have liked some adventure on the high seas.

Too late? You don't think you could get the first one ("Master and Commander") at the library? I would think a library that didn't have it wouldn't be worth it's salt... so to speak. Har. (One of the most endearingly dorky characteristics of one of the characters is his bad puns.)

Shamefully I'm not even a member of the library here yet, and I do think I'll get a chance to go before I leave on hols. Maybe though. I saw the film of M&C and liked it, although I entirely forget it not so the book will be all surprises for me. Yay for my bad memory!

I need to look up the film, now that I've read a few of the books. :)

Don't know if you've ever read them but the Temeraire series by Naomi Novik is really good. It can best be described as sort of Master and Commander..with dragons.

I haven't read them yet, but I heard of them when they were coming out because she is (or was) on LJ and some of her friends were in my friends circles as well. I somehow suspect the writing is not as lovely as Patrick O'Brian's, but I may be premature in making that assessment. I will read them someday in the not too distant future, promise! :) Hm. Library is my friend.
