I've spent most of the day on the SciFi Channel's website watching Tin Man. You can watch all of it there, you just have to endure a short ad at the beginning of each part - which is COOL, I wish other shows would be serialized like that.

Look, I'm going to apologize in advance for what I'm about to say, for those of you who really like this show. I know I come off sounding like an incredibly over-critical cast-iron bitch. Well, that's because I am. Sorry. *hangs head* Yes, I am. And let me say, also, I'm actually enjoying watching it, and am completely hooked and want to see how it comes out, but for those of you who haven't seen it yet, just to let you know so you don't go, "Hey, what the hell'd you get me into?" here's the cons of the matter first...

The directing really sucks (people do a lot of standing still and talking), and the story has gaping holes ("Why would the Big Evil Baddy lock the guy in a metal suit and leave him in the middle of the forest if he was a known resistance fighter? Why wouldn't he be killed?" "Um. I dunno. They had to keep him alive for the plot."), and the writing style is like watching someone Vogue - neat scenes but no transitions between them. They're in a warm city, then suddenly in the next "Chapter" they're in a completely frozen place. No time elapsed, apparently. I had a dance teacher once who said, "Anyone can put together a series of interesting poses. Dance is getting from one pose to another, gracefully."

I like the Lion character, Raw, he's a sweetheart, but it was a bad move, imho, to make him speak in broken English. It's just painful and annoying to listen to. As is the Queen's weird vaguely English and probably put on cut glass accent and stilted phrases. "She knows not." Ow. And Zooey Deschanel looks cute in her leather jacket, but ... well, better directing might have made all the difference for her, you never know.

But how do I know? It might actually compare well to most of the stuff that's out there, currently. Whenever I've seen tv shows in the past few years I don't think I've been impressed once. It seems as though lately people think it's clever and ironic to make something that would have been on MST3K a few years ago. (Which may be why MST3K isn't running any more - too much material!) Just when did the Matel start importing those Chinese toys, anyway? Because I swear some people in the entertainment industry must have been chewing on them growing up.

And in "Tin Man" there's some neat twists with the character developement, and some good slashy chemistry between the Scarecrow guy, Glitch, who is quite cute, and Caine, the Tin Man. And, hey, it's another incarnation of the Oz story, I couldn't stay away. :)
