I downloaded something1 , but when I attempted to open it I got "error downloading codec."
eor has told me that he sometimes just does a search on an error, and my search took me straight to the Microsoft site. It suggested opening Windows Media Player and finding the 'tools' tab, so I started following instructions... couldn't find the tools tab, but then Windows Media Player said it had updates it should download. I would swear that at no time did I ever see the words "Genuine Advantage" - in fact I don't think it said what it was downloading, but when I went to open it again after it was all done I got a demand to verify my copy of Windows with Genuine Advantage before it would let me download Windows Media Player 11. I don't want 11, I just want to play the little .avi file, so I hit cancel. And that's it, just... nothing. It deadends me on that demand every time I try to open it. I don't expect that even uninstalling Media Player will fix this, now. If I'd ever seen the words "Genuine Advantage" I'm sure I'd have stopped the process, because Eor has told me to watch out for that. Grrrr!!! Damn it, this is what happens when I try to solve something for myself and now I'm going to have to ask Eor to fix it for me. I'm so angry I could spit. I feel like such an idiot. :(
