Well, my tentacle monster aloe vera plant that used to sit on top of my desk, causing the drawers not to open right, poking me in the face when I tried to get into them, and sticking his arms into the blinds when I pulled them up... is gone.

On the weekend Eor asked me to take Al and our two Phil Juniors (babies of the philodendron) outside and plant them so he could use the pots for his new pepper plants. I knew the Phils wouldn't survive, because they're creeping plants and there's nothing for them to climb, so I know people will walk on them thinking they're a random piece of plant trash. And they did - two different people set totes of recycling right on top of them, which I moved. But Al was big and spiky and was standing up for himself quite well, and I had a secret hope that I'd be able to con Eor into letting me get a bigger pot and bring him back in when the summer was over. But yesterday evening I came home from work and he was gone. Taken right from the ground leaving a slight indentation. I nearly cried, and Eor can always tell when I'm not happy when I walk into the house. He ran right up and hugged me.

He's of the opinion that someone stole Al and took him home. I hope he's right, and that they just looked at him and went, "Some idiot planted an Aloe Vera outside in this climate?? I'll take better care of you!" Otherwise I can't imagine any reason someone would pull up a plant from someone else's garden. Or, 'dead patch of dirt' if you prefer.

I despair, though, of ever making it look anything like a garden at this rate.

While I definitely see the merit in accommodating the new pepper plants, somehow, exiling the current planties to the outdoors (especially Al) seems a bit extreme. I have a zillion empty pots for the taking, plus yards of really lush, mulchy soil in my comost heap. Want some??

P.S., I hope (and do believe) that Al has found a new adoptive family.

Happy Quails!

Well, I do kind of agree that we were running out of space for Al - he was outgrowing the pot he was in and would certainly have quickly outgrown even the biggest pot we might have put him in. And we're out of space.
