I wrote the following for an email to a friend, but if I don't post something to placehold these days of vaca I might forget everything about them.

Day one was Thursday - up at 6am and a trip to the IRS office in Portland to sort out an issue with our refund (end result was that in fact they had actually given it to us, but someone at the bank had somehow put it in a different account than the one we wanted it in.)  Did you know the IRS office shows a movie every day?  That day it was "Pride and Prejudice," but I was not impressed with Kiera Knightly or the sound quality.  I do need to see the BBC miniseries, someday - Eor's friend, EB, says she thinks the "Oh, Mr. Darcy" ( http://harkavagrant.com/index.php?id=120 ) was inspired by the scene where Darcy (Colin Firth) dips himself in a duck pond ( http://thehoopla.com.au/bonnets-duck-ponds-and-sigh-mr-darcy-the-appeal-of-downton-abbey/ ).  But, you know, getting me in the mood for the trip and all...  Long day, though, because we didn't even get on the plane (after a bus ride) until 7:45pm and arrived at 7am after a 6 hour trip, then it took two hours or more to get out of Heathrow because the line at customs was so long,* so by 9:30 we were on the Tube and by 11am we were at our hotel begging to just leave our bags with them, but they said they have no place to store their customers' bags, so we had to slog them back to the left luggage place at St. Pancras station.  Still, it felt really good to me to be back in King's Cross, even if it is one of the more grungy neighborhoods. :)

I guess I may as well tell you the big joke of the trip right now... When we arrived there were signs up on buses and such talking about how they were in a drought, be careful with fire, don't use too much water, etc.  It started raining as we arrived in the SoHo area and from that point on we didn't have one full dry day.  By the following Thursday we saw the front page of a newspaper saying they'd had more rain in the past 24 hours than was usual in 2 months!  We are still rain gods. ;)

*Also there was a problem with the gate so we sat on the plane for a while before they could unload us.
