"Son, Observe the Time" by Kage Baker is available on the Wayback Machine, and I think I'm going to PDF it and stick it on my Nook, even though I probably have it printed in one of the old Asimov's on our shelf. It's one of The Company stories, and I read it years ago. Mostly the title stuck in my head, and the fact that I love all her Company stories. So I'm not sure if it's the best place to come into Company stories, but it's what I've got available to pimp at the moment. :)

The whole cast of characters she creates over the series is a lot of fun, I think. They're all cyborgs who were taken from different time periods as children and made immortal, told that they will be rewarded in the far future, if they work faithfully for Doctor Zeus Company. Mostly they preserve artifacts before disasters, and in one book they preserve a Native American tribe, and then there's the mystery of what will happen to them, ultimately, as they start to notice their friends begin to go missing and begin to wonder if sometimes the disasters aren't being arranged. Then there's this weird plot with one woman cyborg, Mendoza, who keeps falling in love with mortals, or one mortal who's being reincarnated, possibly.

A lot of her books have gone out of print, and I hope they'll come back in so I can get the whole series. They might, now that she's dead (Argh, why do authors I like have to die!? Oh, wait, it's this damned mortality thing.) but I thought I might pimp this hoping demand might go up. ;)

ETA: Right, as if I could stop reading it for long enough to make it into a PDF. I think I've read this story at least three times, with different levels of knowledge about the whole universe she's placed it in, and I think I get more out of it each time, but regardless of thinking I sort of know how it goes it's just a very compelling story. The cyborgs waiting in growing horror for the event they've been sent to work under the shadow of, trying to avoid identifying with the mortals who are all about to die.
