(I wrote the following in email to Mom, June 9th 2003, and only just happened back across it.  I can't believe I don't have much posted about this stuff.  I'll lose my whole life if I don't write it down.)

Well, things are a little up in the air.  [livejournal.com profile] eor's father has an appointment on Thursday, I think, to see about a mass at the top of his intestine/bottom of stomach.  If he has to go in for surgery Matt will probably go down to Florida to be available.  Hopefully we'll know by Friday.

Meanwhile, his sister J has been diagnosed with breast cancer - I'm not sure how bad it is.

One thing that's settled - my cat, Ginger, died on the 29th.  I miss her terribly, but she was happy right up until the last day, so I guess it could have been worse.  The eventual thing that did her in was an intestinal lymphoma.

Also, Eor and I are going to try to go on a gluten-free diet - have tried it for a few days and it seems to make us feel better.  If it does help we'll probably get blood tests and such to try to determine if we're actually gluten intolerant, which is known as celiac disease.  I suspect he may have it, though I might just be a bit gluten sensitive, because I don't have all the classic symptoms like he does.  The gluten-free diet is incredibly difficult, though, because there's so many things that have gluten in them - I never would have imagined.  It's used in preservatives, caramel colorings and thickeners in all sorts of mixes and packaged foods.

And in good news, they've decided to keep 95 of us at the airport, rather than the 75 they were talking about.  As so many people have been leaving lately we're probably down below 95 by now.  It's getting pretty tight running the place with as few people as we have now - it seems 75 would have been completely impossible.

Am having a most distressing amount of stiffness and pain in my back, so can't sit at the computer long. I know exercise is the best thing, but I also know it often gets to hurting more when I'm out walking quickly. I've been having steadily increasing nagging lower back pain from standing all day at work, and that's combined in a killer way with regular monthly cramps, and then yesterday I tweaked it by just twisting a little as I was standing from a crouch. Today I couldn't face walking - I couldn't do my usual pre-walk stretching. Hell, I couldn't even sit on the floor to begin stretching without whimpering. Took 3 Advil (recommended dosage is one) and am feeling a bit dopey, but hope that will keep me drugged enough to stretch and loosen up before work.

Yesterday I discussed with the vet what it was my cat died of, as she had finished her autopsy. Turns out that she probably went into cardiac arrest because her heart was having a hard time pumping blood because her aorta were constricted by huge amounts of fluid in her abdomen, leaked out from her internal organs which were all aggravated and pushed around by lymphatic (?) cancers, which had spread throughout her abdomen. So basically, it all went at once. I guess there's worse ways to go, because really she was only in pain during the very last day. Note to self: next time a cat's belly swells up over a few days, don't bother to take her to the vet, just let her be home and happy for a little longer.

But on a happy note, Paula is delighted to be an only cat. She's wandering around the place singing (yowling) joyously - Ginger used to beat her up when she did that.

Okay, it's taken me at least a half hour to write this much, because I have to keep stopping to stretch. Need breakfast and shower, now.

The shower helped by back, some.:)
