35) "Return to Neveryon," Samuel R. Delaney - Okay, I'm going to count it, even though I haven't finished reading that essay at the end of it. I read the stories, and I can't bring myself to slog through this stuff I don't understand about language and how the stories are structured to... do something I don't understand.

36) "Love Among the Chickens," P.G. Wodehouse - I really enjoyed this one, I think it's one of his best, even though it's still, essentially, one of his typical love stories and the girl doesn't actually get a ton of development or air time. (I also attempted to read "The Man Upstairs," which is a collection of his short stories, mostly romances, but the parade of cardboard cutouts with circumstances working out just right and them suddenly being understanding of each other got just a little too boring - I only got halfway through.)

I finally got myself together to phone my father. He's so odd. We chitchatted about this and that - I told him a little about my trip to LA and we discussed the relative cleanliness of rain water vs. groundwater and how water is filtered to make it safe to drink - as one does. Then he brought the subject back to my potentially imminent surgery.

"You know, with surgeries like this you can get numb spots. Are you aware of this?"

"Yes."

"You're not bothered by that?"

"No. I'm all set."

"Have you discussed this with the surgeon."

"Yup, we went over it."

"And you're not worried?"

"Nope."

A bit later...

"So, Dad, was there any particular reason you wanted to talk to me?"

"Oh, I just thought you might be feeling nervous, I thought I'd call and buck you up."

Oh, really? Sounded to me as though you were trying to make me more nervous. Is it any wonder I fret about things, with a parent like this? I swear. I know it's just because he's worried, though.

So now I seem to have set Eor to seeking a digital photo frame for my Dad, because I haven't sent him photos in years. Anyone who has digital photo frames - how do you deal with the issue of containing information with the picture? Do you put a caption on the picture?

This has been a relaxing weekend, yet I feel as though I've been productive as well, and this makes me happy. :) It's a shame that summer is over, but it's time to rest a little, now, and that's not bad at all. I've mended Eor's jeans where he knelt in battery acid some months ago (they were brand new, too), and mended my sweater which I had bought for the class in LA and while I was there snagged on a pin that was stuck in the wall. (Grr.) I got the business casual clothes for the class put back in the back closet* - because they won't be used again for who knows how long - and ditto the Faire costume, aside from the blouse, which I just hand-washed. (And who ever heard of a peasant blouse made of silk? Kind of silly, really, but it does look nice. It's not shiny silk, it's like maybe raw silk or something. I'd be as happy or happier with muslin, but that's somehow what I ended up with.)

Yesterday I cooked a massive chicken vindaloo, today it's a beef roast and boiled potatoes - much easier, but it will provide alternate food to keep us from getting completely curried out this week. Possibly if I still have energy after dinner I might cook more apple crisp, although I've been awake for a looong time, I might have to go to sleep, soon.

What an exciting weekend, hum? But I've had enough of exciting for the moment, boring is good. :)

*Putting things in the closet doesn't sound exciting, but believe me it's a bit of an adventure. First you have to bushwhack your way through the underbrush of the closet, in search of the lost land of Back Closet...
